Blue wasn’t always my favorite color. When I was young, I don’t even recall having a favorite color. I wasn’t ever particularly good at coming up with an answer to those inane yet popular favorite thing questions kids seem so fond of asking. Over the years, it’s more like I’ve grown into blue. From the glasses on my face to my phone case, clothes, and my entire home, I’m am surrounded by blue. Then I step outside here in Amalfi and find a world of blue between the sea and the sky. It truly is my blue heaven.
The Amalfi Coast is a wonderland of blue. Even if it’s the same view I’ve photographed countless times, I often can’t resist taking photos of the colors here. Sometimes it feels like I’m trying to document all the shades of blue as they shift from day to day and season to season. Not long ago I happened across this quotation attributed to the French writer Colette, who apparently was just as smitten with the color blue.
“There are connoisseurs of blue just as there are connoisseurs of wine.”
Colette
I’m not sure where that line comes from, but if you know please do leave a comment below. When I was taking these photos on a sunny Saturday in Amalfi, the line “connoisseurs of blue” lingered in my mind. Watching the boats puttering along cutting white lines in the sea as they passed by was one of the most peaceful moments I’ve experienced in a long time.
How about you? Would you like to join me in becoming a connoisseur of blue?
