I was in Amalfi this morning enjoying the beautiful sun on this chilly San Valentino day, and I snapped a few pictures of the city. I guess I had red on the mind for San Valentino!

Upon looking at your fabulous and fascinating photo’s.
I noticed I think on top of the hill it may be the place where I will visit for a day, Sant’Eustachio Ruins!
Would I be correct in what I am seeing? Thank You

Ciao Chuck! Glad you enjoyed the photos. In the photos I posted, it is not possible to see the ruins of the basilica di S. Eustachio, although you can see them from certain parts of Amalfi. I think what you are seeing perched high on the mountain (in the upper left of the bottom photo) is the Torre dello Ziro. It is one of the medieval defense towers of Amalfi, and is a lovely hike from Pontone to get there. The view is wonderful! That would be a great way to spend part of a day as well. Have you been close to S. Eustachio before? I can post some photos on the blog if you are interested! Ciao ciao!

Hello Laura, Thanks for putting me in the right direction. I came very close to the ruin without knowing my family involvement. I felt the area in my blood and said to my wife, I could stay here forever! This was in my early visits in Italy. Then two years later I purchased Art Patronage in the Medieval Mediterranean as you know, to learn more info! I will take that hike from Pontone on my next visit. I enjoy hiking.
Yes interested I am, I would love it if you have more photos of S.Eustachio!!
You are Great, Thank You

Ciao Chuck! Oh, the hiking is great here. I don’t drive here yet (less of problem of the roads than of growing up in the midwest with only automatic cars…), which means I walk the steps connecting the cities along the coast a lot. It is a lovely way to see the area. If you enjoy hiking, you will really enjoy it!
Pictures of S. Eustachio coming soon!
