The first of May is a public holiday in Italy celebrating International Workers’ Day. Known as La Festa dei Lavoratori, it is a day often celebrated out of doors, if possible, with picnics, parades and concerts. Michelle over at Bleeding Espresso wrote a great summary of the holiday last year. Much like Labor Day in America, it is a holiday where many, many, many Italians travel. Since the holiday falls on a Friday this year, it means it will be a busy long weekend here on the Amalfi Coast.
Earlier this week I saw the poster above advertising a free concert today in Ravello’s Piazza Duomo celebrating Primo Maggio, or the first of May. I was hoping to make it, but it doesn’t look like I can. What will I be doing instead? Working! Unfortunately, writing deadlines don’t follow the Italian holiday schedule, and I have a fun project I have been working on that must be wrapped up today. But with dark clouds looming in the mountains above the coastline, it might be a day best spent inside after all.
Whatever the day brings you – rest or a busy schedule – I wish you a Buona Festa dei Lavoratori!!

Its not a holiday here in the UK, we don’t get as many as Italy 🙁

The weather is variable over here on the Adriatic coast. Don’t work too hard! 🙂

We had a barista grumble today that Worker’s Day isn’t a holiday for ‘real’ workers, just those who don’t work! Lots of people traveling; the agriturismo we are staying at is full. Hooray on your fun writing project!

Ciao Anne! I am sorry! The more time I spend here the more holidays it seems there are. 🙂 But don’t you have a bank holiday on Monday? What does that mean in England? Do many shops close?
Ciao Saretta! The weather was a bit strange here yesterday, but the afternoon ended up being quite lovely. Hope you had a nice day!
Ciao Karen! The work is going well! I have been meaning to tell you about it in my emails this week. Yes, it has been fun! Grazie mille!
Ciao Valerie! I bet there were lots of people grumbling like that barista. I know there were a lot of people working yesterday here on the Amalfi Coast, since it is such a big travel and tourism day. It made me wonder when they get a holiday! Thanks… it is nice when writing projects are fun! 🙂
